Gardiner, Montana is in the heart of Yellowstone's Northern Range, where the Gardner River flows into the Yellowstone River. Founded in 1880, the town is surrounded by the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness to the east, the Gallatin Wilderness to the north and west, and Yellowstone National Park to the south.
This “land of fire and ice” in winter transforms into a true Wonderland—frozen waterfalls, steamy geysers and hot springs, and glistening snow-capped peaks. Wildlife is easier to spot against the snow-covered landscape, and there are far fewer crowds in neighboring Yellowstone National Park.
This area is home to the most diverse collection of large wildlife species in the lower 48 states, including bison, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, pronghorn, grizzly bears, black bears, and wolves.
Gardiner is a small residential town and winter is most local's favorite time of year! We offer the essentials (i.e., gas, groceries, lodging, and a few restaurants). Our friendly businesses, the majority of them family-owned, pride themselves on catering to your needs for an enjoyable stay. Northern Yellowstone, just a few miles south of Gardiner, is one of the premier destinations in the world for watching wolves in the wild. While sightings aren't guaranteed, you can drive through the park and find expert information from park rangers and biologists who will be happy to share information about these incredible carnivores. You can also increase your chances of a sighting by going out with a Gardiner-based Guide, who is intimately familiar with the park and where to spot those charismatic carnivores.
