Big Wild Adventures is the West’s leading guide service for backpack trips. We outfit and guide multi-day wilderness backpack trips into the wild Yellowstone National Park backcountry plus most of the high mountain Wilderness areas that surround Yellowstone. We also run trips in numerous other areas of the western U.S. including Alaska, Utah and New Mexico.

Big Wild AdventuresBig Wild Adventures co-owner Howie Wolke has guided well-over 500 multi-day treks since he founded the company in 1978. Nobody has more experience! We are a family business, owned and operated by Wolke and his wife, Marilyn Olsen. Their home and business headquarters is a few miles north of Yellowstone. Unlike some other companies, our trips are all planned and overseen by the owners. We don’t run short trips with numerous departure dates. Our trips are a real wilderness experience, rather than a short foray a few miles into the backcountry. Our Scheduled Trips are 5-8 days and we emphasize getting folks into real untrammeled wilderness, away from crowds. We also offer private Custom and Family Trips. Viewing wildlife is another Big Wild specialty, and our guides do a great job finding wild critters!

List prices include our complete gear package (backpack & rain-cover, day-pack, tent, sleeping bag & pad), plus all food and cooking gear (3 meals/day plus snacks), all trip planning, entry fees and taxes, transportation from town to and from the trailheads, and a Big Wild professional guide/naturalist. All of our guides are Wilderness First-Responder certified. Many of our clients enjoy learning about the flora, fauna and geology of the areas we visit, and our Big Wild guide/naturalists love to share their knowledge.

All trips begin and end in town at a motel that will store our clients’ extra baggage; they also allow clients with vehicles to park their cars for the week. Our trips in the Yellowstone region all begin and end either in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Bozeman, Montana or Gardiner, Montana.
