Smith Family Ranch is a small working horse ranch on the banks of the Yellowstone River. Laurie and Vern Smith have been welcoming guests for over 20 years, helping them to enjoy the great state of Montana.
The guest house is private and cozy—the perfect base for a Montana vacation. There are 2 bedrooms, sleeping four comfortably. The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking needs. Washer and dryer are on site. Outdoor seating, a fire pit and the grill sit on the adjacent patio, which is just above the river-- making it easy for some guests to fish, while others relax. Avid anglers catch fish in the early mornings, while family members sleep in.
Just 18 miles from the north entrance of Yellowstone Park, we offer all the wildlife and scenery of a national park without the crowds and restrictions. Our horses share their pastures with elk, deer, antelope and bighorn sheep. Guests are welcome to wander about. The old railroad track into Yellowstone is part of the property, making walking easy and enjoyable.
Some guests like to watch the border collies work stock, or witness the first ride on a young colt. We have an indoor riding arena, providing opportunities for training and lessons, but most of our guests just enjoy watching the horses and being part of the day-to-day life on a working ranch. If you bring your own horses, corral space is available. It’s a short drive south to visit the natural features of Yellowstone, and a short drive west to enjoy state forest land. To the north are more urban attractions in Livingston and Bozeman. National Parks are decidedly NOT pet friendly. Fortunately, we are. Well-behaved pets are welcome to stay with you in the guest house.
We also have kennel space available. We’re happy to share advice and suggestions on things to do and places to go. Nothing beats a local, personal perspective when you are planning.
